RedR UK Supports EEFIT Technical Reconnaissance Report on the 2025 Afghanistan Earthquake
RedR UK is pleased to have supported the production of the EEFIT Joint Virtual Reconnaissance Report on the 31 August 2025 Eastern Afghanistan Earthquake (M6.0), which caused widespread damage across Kunar and Nangarhar Provinces. The report was developed collaboratively by EEFIT, AFPS, NED University, and RedR UK, and offers a detailed technical assessment of the earthquake’s impacts, including geotechnical failures, building performance, settlement patterns, and disruptions to essential infrastructure.
Drawing on satellite imagery, humanitarian assessments, and engineering expertise, the report provides rare and valuable documentation of how earthquakes affect mountainous regions where non‑engineered construction, steep terrain, and limited access routes shape disaster outcomes. The findings will support UN agencies, INGOs, government departments, and reconstruction actors in improving approaches to safer housing, infrastructure rehabilitation, and risk‑reduction planning.
RedR UK contributed through editorial support and technical input, helping to translate complex engineering observations into lessons that can inform both humanitarian practice and safer reconstruction. The insights gathered will also contribute to the development of RedR’s future training content in areas such as earthquake‑resilient housing, reconstruction in high‑risk geotechnical environments, vernacular building performance, and technical assessment.
This collaboration reflects RedR UK’s ongoing commitment to strengthening technical leadership in disaster response and promoting the use of robust evidence and global best practice across the humanitarian sector.
