Strengthening WASH engineering capacity in Ukraine

We’re working with UNICEF to empower water utilities teams, damaged by war in Ukraine.

Focusing on the learning needs of Vodokanal (water utilities) staff, we’ll train management staff, engineers, and operators

We’re developing training on the most important topics

Our consultants, who are specialists in learning and capacity strengthening and the provision of water and sanitation, are working with UNICEF to design course content.

We’re taking a consultative approach to understand the perspectives of Vodokanal staff, NGOs, UN agencies, and other local and international stakeholders involved in the provision of water and waste water services in Ukraine.

With greater learning support, vodokanal teams will have enhanced leadership, planning, management, and technical capability. In the context of the war in Ukraine, they will be empowered to deliver equitable and sustainable WASH services.

Infrastructure and personnel have been affected by the war

Vodokanal and water management infrastructure has sustained damage from the war in Ukraine. The resources and personnel have also been affected by war. The efforts of experienced staff members have been redirected towards the war effort.

In technical and management capacity, as well as infrastructure, there is a need for sustainable growth to enable the people of Ukraine to access safe water, and for effective waste management systems to remain in place.

There are several vital training priorities

We’ll empower management teams to plan, monitor and implement WASH service delivery, located within government policies and frameworks. This will strengthen the recovery of vodokanals in the current climate, and move towards efficient delivery of safe WASH services for people affected by the war.

We’ll strengthen the technical capabilities of vodokanal engineers, to adopt efficient, sustainable and environmentally-friendly state-of-the-art technologies and processes. This is especially relevant in the light of the Build-back-better principle, core to WASH programming in Ukraine. We’ll also provide practical training for vodokanal operators, to ensure well-functioning WASH infrastructure for efficient WASH service delivery.

We’re undertaking a scoping exercise to identify the most urgent training needs among vodokanal teams. We’ll use these insights to create the right training modules, with a view to adapting to other contexts globally, and developing further self paced learning modules to ensure there is a knowledge transfer from UNICEF to the Ukrainian Water sector, remaining available in-country.
