Transforming WASH at sectoral level

We’re hosting the WASH Road Map Secretariat to lead this sector-wide reform initiative in the WASH sector.

The WASH Road Map (WRM) 2020-2025

During the Global WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) cluster meeting in June 2019 in Geneva, the WASH Road Map (WRM) 2020-2025 was born. Through the Road Map, the WASH sector is initiating new and innovative approaches to save lives, reach public and environmental health outcomes, and build synergies between acute and complex emergencies, humanitarian crises and long-term development.

With strengthened collective commitment, the Road Map implementation plan consists of eight innovative initiatives, each led by one or more partner agencies. The collective includes a range of actors from NGOs and international organisations to the public sector and research institutes, all contributing to its vision of a humanitarian WASH sector equipped with the capacity and resources to deliver qualitative responses at scale, anywhere and anytime.

What is RedR’s role?

From our initial involvement as a member of the WRM, to completing a feasibility study for several initiatives of the WRM, we currently host the Secretariat, coordinating the day-to-day operations of the Road Map.

RedR is hosting the WASH Road Map Secretariat

Between 2024 and 2025, we are managing the roll-out of key initiatives through the sponsorship of the Swiss Development Agency (SDC). As host organisation, RedR is fulfilling secretarial, coordination, communication, monitoring and reporting responsibilities. We undertake financial administration and work closely with the Executive Committee to ensure all efforts are completed to a high standard and align with strategic objectives.

In our role hosting the Secretariat, we remain committed to spearheading innovative change, working in collaboration with leading organisations in the sector such as UNICEF, World Vision, and ICRC.

The WASH Road Map Feasibility Report

We conducted a comprehensive scoping and feasibility study on four of the 16 key initiatives in the WASH Road Map.

The study mapped the current landscape of WASH solutions and identified gaps. We assessed feasibility, relevance, and financial sustainability of different solutions, focusing on resource availability, stakeholder needs, and potential for scaling solutions. The final report details strategies, success factors, and obstacles for scaling the initiatives, along with recommendations for future project phases.

We also developed a concept note to guide implementation phases, including strategy, workplan, and methodology.
