In March 2019, one of the worst tropical cyclones on record hit Southern Africa

More than 1500 people were killed, and a humanitarian crisis impacted thousands in Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.

In 2021, we deployed RedR members to Beira, in central Mozambique, to support the response in-country. 150 WASH and Shelter experts also provided free technical guidance remotely.

We partnered with local NGO Micaia to provide essential humanitarian training.

We supported Micaia in their position of expertise from within the affected communities, equipping them to lead in a disaster response scenario.

Partnership with Micaia

Micaia Managing Director Andrew Kingman explains:

“While we have a committed team who know our communities, and a wide network of local contacts – farmers, beekeepers, community leaders, facilitators, and trainers, we do not have the knowledge and skills to respond adequately to the current crisis.

First, we must respond to the pressing need for assistance in the communities. We understand how to manage aid distribution and how to respond to people dealing with trauma. When the aid phase is over, we need to ensure we have the skills to help people rebuild shattered lives.”
