Data Collection Essentials

This course aims to give a rapid introduction to data collection in humanitarian emergencies.

Description

This training is part of a series of learning courses within a wider project we are undertaking to increase data and decision-making capacity in the humanitarian sector – supported by USAID, from the American People. Find out more about this project with the RedR newsletter.


Module aim

This course aims to introduce data collection in humanitarian emergencies to enable participants to plan and utilise the most effective data collection method to support their aims.

Key learning needs:

  • Develop a clear understanding of data collection fundamentals in humanitarian contexts.
  • Learning the benefits and limitations of different data collection methods and how each can be best employed to collect relevant data for analysis in humanitarian settings
  • Improve participant's abilities to select the right data collection method for their needs


Module Objectives

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between primary and secondary, and qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Explain the benefits and drawbacks of utilising these different types of data and when the use of each is most appropriate.
  • Describe surveys and quantitative approaches to data collection and best practices in using quantitative methods
  • Describe participatory and qualitative approaches to data collection and best practices in utilising these methods


Course Structure

Blended ( Online & Self-Paced)

  • 1 hour Self-Paced Module
  • 2 hours Online Facilitated Session


Who should attend?

The course is tailored for professionals involved in the collection or management of humanitarian data. The primary focus is on individuals who aim to improve their understanding of data literacy, and data collection or have a better understanding of sources of humanitarian data.


How to join

If you would like to attend, please apply through Eventbrite.

We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis. Registration closes on the 22nd of August, 2024. Priority will be given to applicants from developing, low-income countries and territories (LICs). National staff working within the humanitarian sector are keenly invited to apply.
