Explore the importance of conducting a needs assessment when setting up a humanitarian response.

This module explores why it is important to conduct a needs assessment, the different types of data you can collect and provides an overview of some of the tools that you can use. The module is contextualised for the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquake response.

The module is a live session that will take place on Zoom. The facilitated module uses participatory methods and it is expected that learners will participate in discussions and activities in order to deepen their understanding of the concepts that are discussed. Participants will be offered opportunities to share relevant personal experiences and reflections to benefit their own and others' learning.

*Note that the module is short and is intended to provide an introduction to the topic. The key messages document that will be shared at the end of the session provides a summary of all of the key points as well as further learning that they can undertake after the module to deepen their understanding of the concepts that are introduced.

Module aim

To explore the importance of conducting a needs assessment when setting up a humanitarian response. 

Module Objectives

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of undertaking a needs assessment at the start of the project cycle
  • Describe the types of data you might want to collect to inform your work and describe how you can collect these data
  • List tools to analyse collected data.

Course Structure

The module comprises a live facilitated session of 120 - 150 minutes’ duration.

Who should attend?

Anyone responding to the humanitarian needs of people affected by the crisis in Türkiye / Syria who would like to know more about how to conduct a needs assessment. This is a beginner level course.

The live online sessions are hosted on Zoom. We recommend joining via the Zoom app. Participants may join the training via a browser, although the browser offers limited access to some of the interactive features of the training. Participants will be expected to have a stable internet connection and to actively participate in all facilitated sessions.
