Learn about accountability to affected populations and examine why it is important in humanitarian action

This module defines Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) and examines why it is important in humanitarian action broadly and in response to the Horn of Africa humanitarian crisis more specifically. It is tailored to those in back office or HQ roles, with a focus on financial accountability, internal controls and procurement, as well as humanitarian standards, principles and protection. The module provides opportunities for participates to identify actions they can take to increase accountability to the affected populations they are currently working with.

The facilitated module uses participatory methods and it is expected that learners will participate in discussions and activities in order to deepen their understanding of the concepts that are discussed. Participants will be offered opportunities to share relevant personal experiences and reflections to benefit their own and others' learning.

Module Aim

To support participants to implement actions that increase their accountability to affected populations in their work as part of the Horn of Africa Drought Response.

Module Objectives

By the end of the module, participants will be able to:

  • Identify opportunities and practices that can promote accountability within your organizations and humanitarian community at large
  • Identify which aspects of their functions as responders can they integrate the Sphere Standards
  • Explain the different issues and concerns related to vulnerable sectors and age groups during disasters
  • Explain the importance of financial accountability
  • Identify strategies that can encourage the inclusion and participation of these sectors in disaster response

Course Structure

The module comprises one live facilitated sessions, of 120 minutes duration.

Participants will be asked to watch a short video prior to the live session.

Who should attend?

Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) module is intended for anyone working or volunteering with populations affected by the Horn of Africa Drought. There are no formal entry requirements for the module.

This course is offered for free; on a first come, first served basis. We will be creating a waiting list, so please email us if the course is already full so we can keep you in mind if anybody drops out.

How to Join?

If you would like to attend, please register through Eventbrite. You will receive instructions on how to join the course after registration.

The live online sessions are hosted on Zoom. We recommend joining via the Zoom app. Participants may join the training via a browser, although the browser offers limited access to some of the interactive features of the training. Participants will be expected to have a stable internet connection and to actively participate in all facilitated sessions.

HPass Badge
