Sudan Programme

The UN describes the situation in Darfur as one of the ‘world’s worst humanitarian crises’. Fighting is estimated to have cost at least 2 million lives and despite the signing of a partial Peace Agreement in 2006, fighting is still ongoing and rebel forces and militia continue to pose a threat to local communities and aid organisations.

Security incidents involving aid workers have increased dramatically since 2006 and humanitarian staff are increasingly becoming targets for attacks. It is estimated that nearly a quarter of the 5 million people affected by the emergency in Darfur cannot get the vital support they need from humanitarian agencies because it is too dangerous for aid workers to reach them.

Since 2005 RedR has:

  • Trained close to 4025 aid workers since 2005, 1025 in 2009 alone

  • Ran 91 courses in 2009 in the areas of staff welfare and safety for local and international relief personnel

  • Designed and delivered ground-breaking new programmes, like Staff Welfare Programme and Travel Safety, essential for humanitarian agencies to continue life-saving operations in Sudan

RedR’s programme in Sudan

RedR has been providing training in safety, security and risk management for humanitarian organisations in Darfur since January 2005.  We deliver essential training across Sudan; in Khartoum, El Fasher and Nyala to ensure aid workers have the knowledge and skills to best protect them in an emergency or hostile situation.

With over 10 years experience delivering safety, security and risk management training, our courses are widely recognised within the sector.

A full list of our upcoming training courses can be found in the Sudan Training Calendar. We also deliver bespoke training and consultancy services directly to aid agencies in the region.

We deliver training in both English and Arabic.

Safety and Security Programme

The Staff Safety Programme aims to reduce the risks humanitarian workers and aid agencies in Darfur face, by providing safety and security training to staff at all levels. Working with both national and international organisations, RedR's training is designed to meet the needs of aid workers in a changing environment.

Staff Welfare Programme

Darfur is one the world's most violent places for humanitarian work. RedR's Staff Welfare Programme aims to provide humanitarian agencies working here with the information and skills to effectively support staff who experience critical incidents.

"I did the security course as I was going to be responsible for the security and management of over 80 staff. Security was one of the core parts of the job and I could not have done it without some form of training, it had to be with RedR!"

Roger Dean,  Logistics and Liaison Officer with GOAL, attended a RedR course on Management of Staff Safety
