Sri Lanka Programme

Sri Lanka is still struggling to recover from the effects of the 2004 Asian Tsunami and from more than 25 years of ethnic conflict, which has left more than 500,000 people displaced in the North and East of the island.

After the end of the conflict with the Tamil Tigers in May 2009, there is an urgent need for immediate humanitarian assistance and in the long term to equip the local population with the skills they need to rebuild their lives and communities. More than 4 years after the tsunami,  it is also essential to help local communities better prepare for future emergencies.

RedR fulfills the ongoing need for training and support of aid organisations and frontline relief workers in Sri Lanka. Since setting up its programme in 2005 RedR has:

  • Provided vital humanitarian training to 4,959 international and national relief workers. In 2009, RedR had 709 training course participants in Sri Lanka

  • Worked with local communities to develop capacity to respond to natural disasters through disaster preparedness programmes

  • Addressed the critical need for security training of aid workers in an increasingly unstable working environment

RedR’s programme in Sri Lanka

RedR launched its Learning Support and Capacity Building Programme in February 2005 in the wake of the Asian tsunami. We work in affiliation with CHA – the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies – in Sri Lanka, providing essential training services to major international relief agencies, as well as supporting local organisations develop the skills and capacity to respond to disasters.

From our Head Office in Colombo and District Learning Support Offices, we run courses all over the island, ensuring that training is available where it is needed most. We deliver training on a wide range of subjects essential to the humanitarian sector, including Sphere Minimum Standards, Project Management in Emergencies, Staff Safety and Security and Community Participatory training courses.

Our training courses are widely recognised within the sector for giving aid workers the skills and knowledge to make a difference where and when it matters most. A full list of our upcoming training courses can be found on the Sri Lanka Training Calendar We also deliver bespoke training and consultancy services directly to aid agencies in the region.

"Our approach to and awareness of security as an organisation has improved enormously . The RedR training made me realise that security is part and parcel of the normal work of each individual. About half of Malteser International’s staff has now attended training and it has been very beneficial. The team feel more confident in implementing the programme.”

Lawrence Oduma, Former Country Programme Director for Sri Lanka at Malteser International
