Managing People in Emergencies (credit-rated)

         

People are the key in any humanitarian response.  Managing people can be difficult at the best of times, but during the chaos and stress of a complex humanitarian emergency, the ability to manage people is crucial for the success of any programme.

This 2½ day competency-based course will introduce participants to the fundamentals of effective people management.  Upon completion, participants will be able to demonstrate several key skills for managing their teams with greater confidence and success.

Suitable for:

The course is directed at humanitarian personnel responsible for managing others. It may also applicable to other managers in the development or charity sectors. Participants are likely to be fairly new to their managerial role or have experience but without any formal training. All participants are seeking an opportunity to explore management theory and access new tools and techniques to fulfil their management role successfully

Course covers:

This course aims to improve the management of people in humanitarian assistance programmes by providing participants with the opportunity to question, develop, share and reflect through competency based model of learning and assessment.

The 2½ day course will give participants an overview of the skills required for managing people in emergencies and will look at topics such as:
  • the role of a manager
  • building a team
  • communication skills
  • conflict management
  • leadership and motivation
  • human resource issues in an emergency context
Managing People in Emergencies has been credit rated by Oxford Brookes University and is equivalent to 5 M-level credits. Credits can be transferred to the Masters in Development and Emergency Practice (DEP) at Oxford Brookes or other similar postgraduate qualifications. Participants interested in transferring credits to Oxford Brookes should note that currently the minimum transfer is 10 credit points.
This can be achieved through combining the Managing People in Emergencies with Managing Projects in Emergencies or applying for recognised prior learning or experience (RPL/RPE) in the other subject area, subject to acceptance by the University.

Course outcomes:

By the end of the module participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of the manager in humanitarian programmes
  • List the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to manage effectively in the context of    humanitarian emergencies
  • Demonstrate techniques for building and leading team
  • State ways to motivate individuals and maximise their potential
  • Demonstrate how to negotiate to achieve a WIN-WIN outcome and how to resolve conflict in teams and between individuals
  • List human resource issues that face managers and demonstrate ways to tackle them
  • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in relation to managing in emergencies, and draw up an action plan to manage effectively.
The course is planned and run by the RedR UK training team, with associate trainers including specialists in both people management and humanitarian relief. 
 
Participatory training methods are used during the workshop, including group exercises and focused discussions. The course also includes pre and post-workshop learning components.  In order to receive the certificate of completion for this credit-rated course, participants will need to:
  • Complete pre-course reading
  •  Participate in the 2 ½ day workshop
  • Perform to an assessed standard in a case study exercise
  • Complete and pass a post-workshop reflective journal.

Cost:

Please see below for details of workshop fees. The fees include all training and materials, morning and afternoon breaks and lunch on each day. Please note that there is a discounted rate for participants who enrol in both the Managing People and Managing Projects courses. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from the venue, and accommodation if required.

Please note that the Managing Projects in Emergencies is a 2 ½ day course that immediately precedes this course so the courses can be taken together in 5 consecutive days.


Registration will take place at 14.00 hrs on Wednesday and training will begin straight after. On Thursday and Friday training will start at 09.30 hrs and will finish by 18.00 hrs.


Location: The course will run in the RedR training centre in Vauxhall, London
