ABOUT THE PROJECT
Context is a humanitarian staff development initiative, born out of the START Network 2010-2012 Humanitarian Capacity Building Programme. RedR UK will be implementing the project in the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa from 2015-17. Context aims to develop core humanitarian competencies and leadership and management competencies of existing staff at national level, to improve the quality of and accelerate emergency responses.
Context is based on the Core Humanitarian Competencies Framework, and provides highquality participative capacity building that is contextually relevant and delivered by highly skilled local RedR facilitators. The programme is comprised of two learning programmes, Core Skills and Management & Leadership skills development.
MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP SKILLS
This is a nine-month programme providing continued professional development to national agency middle/senior management staff, in their current roles. Which examines key aspects of management and leadership in emergency situations. Key topics include implementing effective humanitarian response, inter-agency collaboration, communication, leadership skills.
· Two face-to-face workshops (four days each)
· Coaching (in collaboration with CHS Alliance formerly People in Aid)
· Practical course work
· Learning on the job
· Self-directed learning
· Group work
Staff members will be actively supported by their agency and line manager throughout the programme and will take ownership of their learning process. The programme offers a unique opportunity to share best practice and establish a common, high quality learning experience for humanitarian staff in different parts of the world.
ORGANISATIONAL & STAFF BENEFIT
Evidence from our 2011 pilot showed that both Core Skills and Management & Leadership skills development programmes that form Context - provide participants with positive affirmation about their roles in humanitarian work. Helping participants to feel better prepared for the future, and give them the ability to see their own role in a wider context.
