RedR delivers global water & sanitation training
15 January 2009
As part of its involvement with the UN-led ‘cluster’ system of humanitarian relief coordination, RedR, in conjunction with UNICEF and local partner, NETWAS, recently held technical training in Nairobi, Kenya in the areas of water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH).
The course was aimed at improving the ability of aid agencies to provide vital clean water and sanitation in emergencies, as well as being able to deal with problems associated with natural disasters such as flooding and drought. Current practice around issues such as the reduction of cholera transmission and hygiene promotion also formed a key part of the course.
The training was designed specifically for field staff working in the areas of water and sanitation, and was tailored to the local region, with case studies and situations relating to Kenya being discussed. A further WASH training course is scheduled for 27 January again in Kenya but this time with a focus on Somalia and issues which affect relief workers operating there.
Participants on the course in Kenya came from aid agencies, local government and UNICEF and feedback was extremely positive. One participant commented that as a result of the course they would change their approach to hygiene & sanitation education, while another said that they would be more sure of myself in an emergency response situation and will apply a lot of things learnt on the course.
The ‘cluster’ system is a way of coordinating relief activities between different aid agencies, so that in an emergency, organisations in each sector such as WASH, shelter, health and nutrition form a ‘cluster’, with a Cluster Coordinator for each. As well as providing technical training for the WASH Cluster, RedR is responsible for the selection and training of WASH cluster coordinators. RedR has also trained Cluster Coordinators for the Nutrition and Health Clusters and trained trainers for the Emergency Shelter Cluster.
